Biography

George was born in 1778. He passed away in 1823. George Leaf was the son of George Spangler and Anna Maria Schoener. He was baptized George Spangler April 16, 1778 at St. Joseph's Church in Willings Alley, Philadelphia, PA.

During the occupation of Philadelphia in 1777, his father George aided the British, primarily as a guide. In 1778, he was tried for treason, found guilty and executed on the Commons at Philadelphia. He left behind a wife, Anna Maria Schoener-Spangler, and two young children, Catherine and George. Because of the circumstances of their father's death, his children took the surname Leaf [the English translation of the surname Laub, their paternal grandmother's maiden name], and subsequent generations retained that name.

His mother went on to marry two additional times, outliving both husbands (Englebert Mintzer and Amos Jones).
