Robert graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1844 and became a merchant in Philadelphia, where he married Julia Scott, the daughter of the Hon. John Morin Scott of Philadelphia,[2] at St. James Church on 15 Mar 1849.[3]
By 1850, Robert had sufficiently established himself as a merchant that he could hire three Irish women as domestic servants: Selena Smiley, est. age 20; Catharine Kennedy, est. age 27; and Sarah McClusky, est. age 20.[4] The 1860 census specified that he was a dry goods merchant and valued his real estate at $10,000 and his personal property at $2,000. He could now hire four Irish women as domestic servants: Margt B. Callen, est. age 30; Lizzie Knox, est. age 28; Annie McGunn, est. age 28; and Annie Little, est. age 24.[5]
By 1880, Robert had become a "commission merchant." Two servants were listed as part of his household: Annie O'Brien, est. age 60, and Catherine Sullivan, est. age 24, both unmarried and born in Ireland[6]
Robert Waln Leaming died of "exhaustion" in Philadelphia, Phiadelphia County, Pennsylvania on 9 Nov 1884,[7] and may have been retired, since he was described at his death as a "gentleman." He was buried on 12 Nov 1884, in Church of the Redeemer Cemetery in Bryn Mawr, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.[8]

Learning-3 and Leaming-78 appear to represent the same person because: Robert Waln LEAMING was the son of Jeremiah Fisher LEAMING. The LEARNING name is a misreading of LEAMING. Please merge these profiles with the LEAMING profile as the surviving one. See Leaming-78 for documentation of the name from the University of Pennsylvania's alumni records.
