Biography

Ernest Leane is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Ernest Albert Leane was born on 1st October 1869 at Prospect, South Australia, Australia. He was the second son of Thomas Leane and Alice Short.[1]

He married May Boswell on 23rd June 1894 at Kent Town, South Australia.[2] Although having eleven children, they separated before 192? and divorced before 1934.

Ernest (standing at right) was the second eldest of the five of the six surviving Leane brothers and five grandsons served in the First World War (the other served in the Second World War). In the studio portrait, left to right: standing: Major Benjamin Leane (KIA 1917), Lieutenant Colonel Raymond Leane MC, Warrant Officer 1 Ernest Leane; seated: Major Edwin Leane and Major Allan Leane (died of wounds 1917). His son, Arnold, also served and was killed in action in 1916. His nephews, Allan Edwin Leane (died of wounds 1917), Geoffrey Paul Leane and Reuben Ernest Leane, all served in the 48th Battalion, and Maxwell Leane served in the RAN.

He enlisted, at the age of 45 years, in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War, quickly attaining the rank of Warrant Officer Class One; Regimental Sergeant Major of the 27th Australian Infantry Battalion. Two of his sons also served in the battalion, one being killed in action.

Ernest enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War on 25th January 1915.[3] He was a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Australian Ordnance Corps, returning to Australia on 17th March 1920.

He married Alice Garrett on 6th September 1934 at Adelaide.[4] They had had a son in 1924 who only lived one day.

He passed away on 16th October 1936 in South Australia.[5] and is buried at the Walkerville Wesleyan Cemetery, in Walkerville, South Australia.[6]
