Louis was born on 20 Sep 1817 in Les Cèdres, Quebec to Francois Barthelemi Leduc and Marguerite Major, and was baptized on 21 Sep 1817 at St-Joseph-de-Soulanges in Les Cèdres, Quebec. “Le vingt et un Septembre mil huit cent dix sept … baptisé Louis né d’aujur d’hier du legitime mariage de Francois Leduc cultivateur en cette paroisse et de Marguerite Major”. [1][2][3]
When Louis was about 17 years old, he moved with his family to the Detroit area. His oldest brother Ambroise stayed in the Ile Perrot area with his wife and family, but the rest of the children accompanied their parents. The family was still living in the Ile Perrot area when his sister Judith Angelique married Louis Arrivee on 27 May 1834 at the parish of St-Timothee in Beauharnois, and her father Francois is cited as a witness.[4] Judith Angelique and Louis Arrivee had their first child baptized on 23 Aug 1835 at Ste-Anne in Detroit,[5] so they must have moved some time between May of 1834 and Aug of 1835.
Marriage and Family
Louis married Marie Clemence St-Jean in 1843, but there are two marriage records for them. The first is dated 9 Jan 1843 and is from L’Assomption in Windsor. The second is dated 29 Feb 1843 and is from Ste-Anne in Detroit. It does not appear to be a duplicate entry, with one from the location where the marriage occurred, and the other where they resided. They agree in all aspects except for the given name of the bride, and the date of the marriage.
In the earlier record from L’Assomption, it states: “Le neuf de Janvier mil huit cent quarante trois … mariage etre Louis Leduc, fils de Francois Leduc et de Marguerite Major au Detroit et Maria St Jean fille de feu Pierre St Jean et de Pelagie Galina”. The witnesses are: Francois Leduc, Michel Leduc and Louis St Armand.[6]
In the later record from Ste-Anne’s, it states: “Die 29 Feb 1843 ….Ludwicus Leduc atatis 26 annorum, filius Franciscus et Margareta Major Detroitendum, & Margareta St Jean atatis 22 annorum, filia Petri + Pelagia Galinam Detroitendium”. The witnesses are: F Leduc and T Faulen(?).[7]
Louis and Marie Clemence probably lived in the Windsor area, as their first 6 children were baptized at L’Assomption. There is an immigration note in the 1900 census that states Marie Clemence immigrated to the US in 1857, which is probably about when the family moved to Detroit and is supported by the baptisms of their last two children occurring at St-Anne in Detroit.

Mary, 82, b Aug 1817, Imm 1857, # Children 5, 1 living
In the 1900 Census, both the birth years and ages are wrong, and Marie had a total of 8 children with 5 living in 1900. On Marie’s death record in 1905 it states that she had a total of 7 children with 3 living. It is assumed that Albert died some time prior to her death in 1905, with Louis Gilbert, Marguerite Louise and Elise Marceline still living.

Regarding Louis’ birth date, almost all of the online sources have it as 10 Sep 1818 in St Timothee, Quebec but that is not correct. The source photo posted above by Gilles Caron and the last Ancestry link both show the birth date as 21 Sep 1817, and that he was baptized on the same day (nee d’aujour”). These sources state his parents names, and they match those stated on his marriage record.
