James E. Lee was born about 1840, as estimated from his earliest known census record in 1870; his 1900 census record gives his birth information as April of 1837. He was born in Virginia. His parents are unknown at the time of this writing.

In the 1870 census, James (age 30), Farm Laborer, was at Falls Church, Fairfax, Virginia.^[1]

In the 1880 census, James (age 40), Farmer, was the married head of household at Falls Church, Fairfax, Virginia, United States. His infant son, Maurice, only two months old, had not yet been named.^[2]

In the 1900 census, James (age 65), Farmer, was the married head of household at Falls Church, Fairfax, Virginia.^[3]

In the 1910 census, James [poorly transcribed as James "Sell," but the surname "Lee" is clearly readable in the original text] (age 72), Farmer, was the married head of household at Falls Church, Fairfax, Virginia, United States. James was living and farming on his own general farm, which he owned free and clear of a mortgage. James and his wife were recorded as having been married for 41 years; Mary had borne 12 children, with 10 still living at the time of the census.^[4]
