Samuel Leonard, born ca. 1721,[1] probably in Bridgewater, married Lydia Besse, of Wareham, MA, on 7 July 1748 in Wareham.[2]


  • Unnamed child, died on 20 Dec. 1750 in Bridgewater.
  • Lydia Leonard, born on 29 Oct. 1751 in Bridgewater, marriage not found.
  • Samuel Leonard Jr., born on 28 Aug. 1753 in Bridgewater, married Deborah Mitchell, on 27 May 1777 in Bridgewater. He died testate on 11 Dec. 1840 in Bridgewater, aged 87 years.

1054 iv Rowland5 Leonard, born on 25 July 1755 in Bridgewater,[96] married Lydia Smith, of Walpole, MA, on 8 Feb. 1787 in Walpole,[97] and they moved to Pomfret, Windsor Co., VT. They were living in Pomfret, VT, in the 1791 federal census,[98] and in the 1800 federal census.[99] He died testate on 6 July 1806,[100] probably in Pomfret, VT, his will dated 30 June 1806, and probated on 5 Aug. 1806, mentioned his wife Lydia, sons Rowland Leonard and John Leonard, twin sons Caleb and Joshua Leonard, three daughters Lydia Leonard, Eunice Leonard, and Rebecca Leonard, and son Oliver Leonard, who was to inherit his farm and land.[101] His inventory, dated 20 Aug. 1806, and recorded in Jan. 1807, was valued at $949.95, including his farm supposed to be 50 acres with the buildings, valued at $530.[102] (See Appendix [C] for a full transcription of his will.) She supposedly remarried to (___) Richardson, and then to (___) Hoyt, and she died on 7 Aug. 1829.[103] They had several children.

  • Dr. Sylvanus Leonard, born on 15 Sept. 1759 in Bridgewater, married Eunice Kinsley, daughter of Samuel and Sophia (White) Kinsley, on 19 Nov. 1787 in Bridgewater. They had a daughter Clarissa.

1057 vii Silas5 Leonard, married Nabby Smith on 15 Dec. 1785 in Bridgewater,[140] and they moved to Sharon, Windsor Co., VT, where he was a shoemaker.[141] They were living in Sharon, Windsor Co., VT, in the 1791 federal census,[142] and he died intestate in 1800 in Sharon, VT. On 6 Mar. 1800 Abida Smith, Esq., of Pomfret, VT, applied for administration of his estate, with a certificate from Nabby Leonard, widow of the deceased, relinquishing her right and asking that Smith be appointed as administrator. Reuben Spalding, Esq., David Child, and Titus Shepherd were appointed to appraise his estate, which was dated 2 Apr. 1800, presented on 29 Aug. 1800, and totaled $1511.69, including his farm containing 100 acres of land in Sharon valued at $900, with various livestock, wheat, rye, corn, etc.[143] Reuben Spalding, David Child, and Titus Shepard were appointed to set off to Nabby Leonard, widow of Silas Leonard, her dower in the estate of Silas Leonard, on 6 Apr. 1802.[144] They had one son:

a. Silas Leonard (Jr.), born say ca. 1798 in Sharon, VT. Uriah Hayes, of Sharon, was appointed as guardian of Silas Leonard, a minor above the age of 14 years, and heir to the estate of Silas Leonard, late of Sharon, deceased, pursuant to the choice of said minor, on 3 Feb. 1813.[145]

  • Eunice Leonard, marriage not found, possibly the unnamed child of Samuel Leonard who died on 2 June 1770 in Bridgewater.
  • Zilpah Leonard, married 1.) Cephas Kinsley in 1788 and they lived in Middleborough, where he was a blacksmith. He died intes­tate on 15 Mar. 1800 and Zilpha was granted administration of his estate. She remarried to 2.) Joseph Leonard “2d,” of Middleborough, in ca. 1801.
  • Abigail Leonard, married Jacob Perkins, son of Isaac and Joanna (Edson) Perkins, of Titicut, MA, on 2 Oct. 1788 in Middleborough. He was a grandson of Benjamin and Joanna (Orcutt) Edson. She supposedly died on 20 Feb. 1810 in “Titicut Parish,” Middleborough
