Biography

Star of David.

John was born in 1796. He passed away in 1873.

John was known as "Captain" John Levi. He first appeared as "Captain John Levi" in the 1830 census of Greenville, SC. There's no knowledge of why or how he obtained this title. John lived in Laurens Co, SC when he enlisted in the Army in 1812. He gave his age as 20 years old (b. 1792). Most records give his birthdate as 1798, and if this is correct he would have been only 14 years old at the time of enlistment. It wasn’t that unusual for boys this young to enlist, so I don’t know why he would have given his age as 20 years old.

Father of John Levi

John's Father was possibly Jacob Levi/Levy as he was the only Levi/Levy in Laurens County in 1800 with a male born between 1780 - 1800. No other Levis before or after 1800 in Laurens. John married Sarah Bailey, b. 1808 in Laurens Co., SC.
