William C. Lewellen was born in Anson County, North Carolina on January 5th 1803 to Jesse and Dorcas Sheppard Lewellen. Around the age of 25 he married Sarah Fryar in Henderson County, Tennessee.

William was a school teacher in Tennessee but when the Chickasaw Indian Territory in north Mississippi opened for settlement, William took his wife and four young sons along with two brothers of sarah's John and Thomas Jefferson Fryer and moved to the area.

In December of 1843 William was awarded a land grant of 160 acres in the area of what is now called Ripley, Ms. where he spent most of his life as a gentleman farmer.

Tragedy struck the family on October 3, 1856, when William was killed by a falling log at a house raising near Ripley. He was buried at Wiers Chapel Cemetery which is also known as Lewellen Cemetery.

One and a half acres of land was donated by the Lewellen family for the Cemetery which is now Wiers Chapel cemetery, where William and many other lewellen family are buried.

Williams wife Sarah would go on to live another twenty years before being buried beside him.

William and Sarah had seven sons and three daughters, two of the sons became doctors and three other sons fought in the Civil War.

Information provided by Michael W. Lewellen Inscription Inscription reads: To My Husband The flowers we most highly prize, Are the first to meet decay. So those that we most dearly love, By death are snatched away.
