Biography

George was born in 1872. He was the son of Moses Lewis and Martha Shadoan. He passed away in 1950.

George first appears in documented sources as an 8-year-old in the 1870 census, where he is residing in the household of his parents M G Lewis, age 38, and Martha A Lewis, age 32, in Precinct 8 of Pulaski County, KY. Also residing here are George's siblings Owens L (age 12), Stepen (sic) S (age 10), Evanga L (age 6), and Susan W (age 4). Also residing in the household are Susan Martin, age 77, and Kentucky-born Nelson Alsop, age 22. Their relationship to M G Lewis is listed as "other".

The 1900 census lists George's birthdate as December 1872; here he is residing in Magisterial District 7, Sloans Valley Precinct, Pulaski, Kentucky, United States, with his wife, Desda, age 27 (born in May 1873), and their daughter Georgia (age 3, born December 1897). George's occupation is listed as "farmer".

In the 1910 census, George C (sic) Lewis (likely for "Clellan" of his middle name "McClellan"), age 37, and Desda Lewis, age 36, are residing in Sloans Valley of Pulaski County. Also living with them are their children: Georgie (11); Alabama (8); Gerald C (6); and Emma L (age 0). On the original document, it looks to me as if George's wife's name is recorded as "Desda"; however, familysearch.org has this listed as "Derda".

By the time of the 1920 census, the family are still residing in Sloans Valley: George C, 49; Desda, 47; and their children, Georgia, 21; Gerald, 16; Louise age 10 (Emma L); and Alabama Spears, 19, and Alabama's husband, 22-year-old Kentucky-born Jerry Spears.

In the 1930 census, George C and Desda M Lewis, both listed as age 59, are residing in District 8 of Pulaski County, along with their 26-year-old son Gerald.

In the 1940 census, George Lewis, 68, and Desda Lewis, 67, are residing in Magisterial District 8, Pulaski, Kentucky. Also residing with them are 49-year-old Pennsylvania-born son-in-law John Deegan; 14-year-old Kentucky-born grandson John M Deegan; and 28-year-old Kentucky-born servant Della Cook.
