James was born in Kooringa, South Australia on 11 August 1877 to John Lewis and Martha Brook.[1]
James married Nancy Phillips Brookes in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia on 1 January 1903.[2] The marriage was reported in the Western Australian newspaper, The Kalgoorlie Miner, on 5 January 1903 as follows:[3]
Dr. Lewis' Marriage. — The marriage of Dr. J. B. Lewis, of Menzies, and Nurse Brooks, of the Kalgoorlie Hospital, was celebrated at St. John's Church, Kalgoorlie, on Thursday last, the Rev. S. S. Bullen officiating. Dr. Lewis was until recently resident medical officer at the Kalgoorlie Government Hospital, but left to start practice at Menzies.
James served in the Australian Army during the First and Second World Wars. During the first war, he enlisted on 14 July 1915 and was given the rank of Captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps. He was discharged on 1 November 1919 with the rank of Major in the 10th Field Ambulance Company. During the second war, he enlisted in Adelaide, South Australia on 29 September 1939, and was discharged with the rank of Major in the 4th Garrison Battalion on 31 October 1942.[4][5]
James died in Walkerville, South Australia on 22 September 1966 at the age of 89 years.[6]
James' remains were cremated at Centennial Park Cemetery in Pasadena, South Australia on 24 September 1966.[7]
