Biography

James Lindsay served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 1864
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 2nd Virginia Cavalry

James C. Lindsay was born in Virginia about 1846. He would join the CSA in 1864, and ride with the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company I.

In 1860, he is literally next door to ROBERT AUSTIN LEE, who was also in the 2nd Cavalry, Company I. Robert's brother Edward in same unit as well.

After the war, James moved to Missouri, where he married Susan Dunivant(?) on August 6, 1872 in Callaway, Missouri. Susan was also born in Virginia, and her family had moved to Missouri sometime prior to 1861. She was noted in the 1870 census of Callaway with parents Josephus(1811 VA) and Jane(1812 VA), and brother Julius(1861 Missouri). Last name spelled Dunnavant in this record.

The 1880 record for Callaway showed James, Susan and sons:

  1. Howard 1874
  2. James W. 1878

They would add Edward in 1885.

James is next noted in a census of Civil War Soldiers in Missouri. This 1890 census of Civil War Soldiers noted he joined in 1864. This record also substantiates Mr. Driver, noting James as being in the 2nd Cavalry, Company I.

A 1900 census for Saint Aubert, Missouri shows James and wife Susan A. with two of the children. This record also give birth months for all:

  1. James C. Aug 1846
  2. Susan A. Mar 1845
  3. James W. May 1877
  4. George Aug 1885

There is a World War I enlistment record which probably is George since it's in Callaway, Missouri, and same birth month. I've attached below, and it notes birth as August 25, 1885.

No record found for 1910, as yet, for James or wife Susan.

Susan passed away some time between 1901 and 1919, as James was shown in the 1920 and 1930 census living in the Confederate Old Soldiers Home in Dover, Missouri, listed as widowed.

Speculation on parentage:

No early records were found to prove James C. Lindsay's parents. The 1860 census could be a clue, showing him in the home of blacksmith Paschal Smith, born 1801. Back in 1840 in Campbell County, Paschal was living a few homes away from a Thomas Lindsay(1800-1810), one possible relative for James.

Also an 1850 census of Pittsylvania showing a James Lindsay born in 1848, as son of James(1816) and Mary(1823) Lindsay. Will attach in case that proves correct.
