Robert A. Lee was born in 1835 to Burwell and Matilda Arnold Lee in Campbell, Virginia. His parents are noted later in his marriage record of July 2, 1856 to Martha K. Arnold.
Robert is shown in the 1850 census of Campbell County, Virginia in father Burwell Lee's home, with Burwell's second wife Elizabeth Purcell and several siblings. 1860 in Western Campbell census are shown Robert and Martha Lee with no children. In the 1860 census living next door, 13? year old JAMES LINDSAY, would join the 2nd Cavalry in 1864.

Noted in the biography is that Robert A. Lee served in the CSA, 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company I. During the war he was captured twice; at Kelly's Ford in 1863, and Gaines Mill in 1864. He was exchanged each time.
Robert's brother Edward Price Lee Sr was also in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry company I. He took ill and died in July of 1864.
In later life, Robert became a minister. He and Martha had 5 children:
