Fred was born in 1825 as Sigfrid Nilsson.[1] His parents were Nils Olsson and Anna Sigfridsdotter. The family lived in the tiny village of Västbygge, right next to the slightly larger town of Venjan, in Dalarna county, south-central Sweden. Besides farming, many towns in the county had specialized trades, Mora area was clocks, Göinge had forgers and metalworkers, and in Venjans it was casks and boats, as they are located at the north end of lake Venjan (Venjanssjön).[2]
The 1818-1828 Household Examination Book, Venjans Parish, page 16, is where we find the details of how he came to be.[3] We can spot his parents easily, they both have a "1819" in the "Gift" (married) column, and we can see their birth dates. His father Nils Olsson was born July 17th 1793, and his mother Anne Sigfridsdotter on December 13th 1789. Children from this union can be seen as son Olof, born 1820, daughter Anna, born in 1822, and our subject, son Sigfrid born on February 1st 1825. The final child born in the decade covered by this book was son Nils, born in 1827.

His wife is Margret Erdsdotter, and children are Sigfrid born 1853, Erik-1859, Olof-1863, and Anders in 1873.
