Biography

A Jane Oliver Line was born in 19 Oct 1804 and christened 16 Dec 1804 at St Margaret's Church, Westminster. Daughter of Edward by Elizabeth. This is 1-2 miles from Pimlico and Chelsea, where the Jane, wife of Charles Garlick, claimed to have been born (in the 1851 and 1861 censuses). If her father was the Coldstream guard Edward Line then he could well have been stationed nearby.

Alternatively, a (different?) Jane Line was born 1805 but christened 17 May 1813 (age 8?) at Saint Phillips, Birmingham. Her father was also Edward Line, her mother also Elizabeth; their abode was Lower Priory St. Birmingham, Warwickshire, and his profession was White Smith (whereas Edward Line was still a Coldstream guard).

Both these Jane Lines would have been about 5 years older than the Jane, wife of Charles Garlick, listed in the 1851 and 1861 censuses and in her death registration, all concurring on the year of birth being 1809-10.

On 13 Dec 1827, Charles Garlick married Jane Oliver Line at St. Philip, Birmingham. He was a batchelor, she was a spinster. Both were of the parish, both signed. The witnesses were Ann Humphris and Michael Broome. If it were not for the somewhat unusual middle name Oliver, shared with her putative brother Samuel Oliver Line, one would have thought that the Birmingham Jane Line was a more likely candidate. Unless they are one and the same.

Charles and Jane Garlick had a son Edward, born February 1828, christened in Birmingham. If this is the same Jane, she would have been 7 months pregnant at the time of their wedding (?).

This is likely to be the Jane, married to Charles Garlick of Kenilworth who gave her age as 41 in 1851 (b. 1810) and 40 in 1861 (b. 1811) and her birthplace as either "Pimlico" or "Chelsea", because the GRO indexes for their children Fanny, Henry, Ellen, and Mark show that her maiden name was Line.

Jane was born about 1810-11 in Pimlico or Chelsea, according to the 1851 and 1861 censuses (but Warwickshire according to the 1841 census).

Her putative, much (~20 years!?) younger, brothers (?) Henry Waterloo Line and Samuel Olivar (sic) Line were christened jointly on 8 Nov 1824 at Saint Phillips, Birmingham. Henry was born 25 Aug 1821, abode "Burrough", London and his father Edward Line was a Serjeant (sic) in the Coldstream Guards. Samuel was born 10 Oct 1824, abode Garrison Lane, Aston parish, and Edward was by that time a "Gent(lema)n". Not clear where "Burrough", London refers to since 1821 predates the creation of the Metropolitan boroughs.

Jane Garlick died Apr-Jun 1871 at Warwickshire, aged 62 (est. y.o.b. 1809).
