George Washington Linn, son of John and Nancy (Gant) Linn, was born in Indiana and moved with his family to Illinois sometime in or before 1844, when George's sister Mary was born in that State. George appears with his family in the 1850 census, taken on 30 September, when he was 16 years of age. They were then living in the town of Columbus in Adams County, Illinois.[1]
George was at least twice married. In the 1870 census, he and his family were enumerated as follows ...
The census states also that George was a dry goods merchant who owned $1,600 in real property and $2,000 in personal property and that Freddy was born in the month of February. Sadly, Freddie died only days later and was buried in Columbus Cemetery, Columbus, Adams County. His gravestone reveals that he died on 1 August 1870 at the age of 5 months 10 days and was the son of "G.W. & M. E. " Linn.[3]
George's wife passed away on 20 May 1873 and was also laid to rest in Columbus Cemetery. Her gravestone reveals that her first and middle names were Mary Ellen, she was the "consort of G. W." Linn, and she was at the time of her death 39 years, 1 months, and 3 days old.[4]
In the meantime, George and Mary Ellen also had a son Harry Clifton Linn, who was born on 15 February 1873 and died on 30 July 1873 at the age of five months and fifteen days. His gravestone at Columbus Cemetery describes him thus and also as "Son of G. W. and M. E."[5]
George remarried two or three years after these tragic losses. His second wife brought two children of her own to the marriage ...
This census states also that George was a druggist and his daughter Cora was born in the month of July.
George was widowed again on 30 July 1896, when Irene passed away. She was laid to rest in West Point Cemetery.[7] George followed her to the grave on 4 January 1905.[8] Although he owned two properties and had money interests in the estates of both his parents and a brother, he left no will. Letters of administration were issued to James L. Miller saying that George had left no widow and naming his survivors as follows[9] ...
The petition for letters of administration were filed by George's daughter Cora G. Fletcher, who stated at the hearing thereof that George was "late of the Town of West Point in the County of Hancock and State of Illinois", where he owned two lots.
