James Linn was the younger son of Hugh Linn of Franklin Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. James struck out on his own when a young man and made a home first in Hookstown, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Beaver and Columbia Counties share a border, and just 33 miles separate Hookstown from Hanoverton in Franklin Township, Ohio. In the 1850 and 1860 census, James appears in Beaver County with Ohio listed as his place of birth and saddler his occupation.[1][2] He returned to Columbiana County, Ohio before the 1870 census and began farming, as his father had always done.[3] In 1880 and 1900, however, his occupation was listed respectively as harness maker and owner of a harness shop, clearly related to his earlier occupation of saddler.[4][5]
While in Pennsylvania, James married Mary Bruce, Mary's maiden name being revealed on the death certificate of their son Ellis Wilton Linn.[6] Their family is enumerated in the census as follows ...
James Linn, age 75, b. Oct 1824 in OH, both parents b. in IRE, Harness Shop
Mary Linn, age 70, b. Nov 1829 in OH, father b. in OH, mother b. in CT
Thomas Linn, age 40, b. Nov 1859 in OH, both parents b. in OH, News Dealer
The census states also that James and Mary were married 48 years and Mary was the mother of 2 children.[11]
James Linn continued to work as a harness maker until his death in Hanoverton on 20 December 1904. The county death record states also that he was born in Franklin Township of Columbiana County and was married and a resident of Hanoverton.[12] Like many in his family, James was buried in the town's Bethesda Cemetery.[13] It has not been discovered when or where Mary died.
