Thomas later changed his occupation to that of his father, harness maker, apparently sometime after his father's death. However, he suffered a hernia that developed into strangulation of the bowel and peritonitis and took his life on 15 July 1911. He died in the Massillon State Hospital in Stark County, Ohio. His death certificate provides all that data and states also that he was born in Pennsylvania, was still single, and previously lived in Hanoverton, Columbiana County, Ohio.[2] He was buried in the Massillon Cemetery
