Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Dealy (Linsey) King is a part of US Black heritage.

Not much is known about Delia's parents Jim Long and Jane Linsey. The only information about Jim and Jane is what can be gathered from census records.[1]

Origins

Delia was born in 1875 in Henry County, Georgia.[2] Her parents were sharecroppers.[2] Delia's father had been a slave who was used to breed children with several women in addition to Delia's mother, Jane.[2]

Family

Delia was twenty years old when she married thirty-one-year old James Albert King on 20 August 1895 in Stockbridge, Henry County, Georgia.[3] The couple worked throughout Henry and Clayton Counties in Georgia, moving from place to place as sharecroppers for the first few years. In 1900, the couple settled in Stockbridge, Henry County, where they raised nine children.[2]

Delia's husband struggled with alcoholism and was often abusive. Despite this, and the ever-present poverty and racism, Delia worked hard to provide for the children. She worked in the fields during the season and went into white people's homes to do ironing during the winters.[2]

Nine children:[4][5]

  1. Woodie b ca 1897
  2. Michael b ca 1898
  3. Lenora "Lurena" b ca 1902
  4. Cleo b ca 1905
  5. Lucile b ca 1906
  6. James Jr. b ca 1908
  7. Rubie b ca 1909
  8. Henry b ca 1914
  9. Jae L. b ca 1915

Note: In the 1920 Federal Census, eight children, seven living, were reported (see below).

Floyd Chapel Baptist Church

Delia was a faithful member of her church. She found great strength and solace in her faith and reared her children to have the same. They followed in her footsteps with a foundation in spirituality. Delia's husband was not religious, but he didn't stop her and the children from attending.[2]

Michael, (later called Martin Luther King Sr.), was the second child and the first son. He became a Baptist minister and remembers attending many church meetings and functions with his mother.[2]

Death and Legacy

Delia passed away on 27 May, 1924 at the age of forty-eight.[2]

Shows father as Jim Long https://www.ancestryagency.com/blog/martinlutherkingjr_familytree. I am unsure if the mother was Mary Jane Linsey or-as listed on several tree-Jane Linsey.
