He enlisted in the United States Army on 19 Feb 1941 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and served as a TEC 5 during World War II. He was discharged on 7 Aug 1945.[5][6]
On 24 Aug 1948 he married Martha Christine (Doby) Cobb (1924-2012) in Guilford County, NC.[7] They had one child: Melvin Harold Linville.[8] He and Christine were divorced on 12 Jul 1965 in Forsyth County, NC.
On the 1950 Census, he was 32 years old and lived with his wife and son in Salem Township, Forsyth County, NC. He was the proprietor of a retail grocery store.
He passed away on 18 Sep 1994 in Salisbury, Rowan County, NC, and was buried at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC.[9][10][11]

Mr. William Harold Linville, 76, retired hotel operator, died Sept. 18, 1994 at the VA Medical Center.
The funeral is 11 am Wednesday at Forsyth Memorial Park, Winston-Salem.
Survivors are his son, Melvin Linville of Hephzibah, GA; brother, Don Linville of Rural Hall; sister, Mrs. Bill Crawford of Clemmons; grandson, John Linville of Raleigh; nephews and a niece.
Lyeriy is in charge. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem-Forsyth County, 1100-C Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC, 27103.[8]
