Grover was born in 1888. He graduated from Columbia University and received the first aeronautical degree from a US university. Following graduation, he joined the Queen Aeroplane Company in New York, managed the Wright Company factory in Dayton, Ohio. In 1917 he formed the Loening Aeronautical Engineering Corporation. It merged with Keystone Aircraft in 1928 and he then formed the Grover Loening Aircraft Company. The Loening Flying Yacht won the 1921 Collier Trophy. One of his former employees was Leroy Grumman who then consulted with during World War II. In 1965 Loening was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame for his innovation in seaplane technology and production. He passed away in 1976.
