Biography
John was born in 1851,the eldest son of Rev. Lord Adam Loftus (1816–1866), rector of Magheraculmoney, and his wife Margaret Fannin (d. 1902).[1]
John was declared bankrupt on 23 October 1878.
John succeeded his first cousin John Henry Wellington Graham Loftus, as 5th Marquess of Ely in 1889.
On 21 November 1895, he married Margaret Emma Clark (d. 1931). They had no children.
Probate of the will of John H. Ely, Marquis, late of Ely Lodge Enniskillen County Fermanagh, who died 18 Dec 1925 granted 20 Sep 1927 at Dublin to James P. Ringwood, solicitor. Effects £ 316. [2]
He was succeeded by his younger brother, George Loftus, 6th Marquess of Ely.
