In about 1849, Washington's father had moved northwards from Kentucky into the frontier area of Iowa, where he had purchased land and established a farm in Jasper County.[2] The township boundaries apparently shifted over the years, since the farm was in Independence Township by the time of the 1860 census.[3]
Before 1870, Washington's father moved the family south into Marion Township in Jasper County, Missouri, where he purchased a farm near the forming town of Carthage. In 1870, Washington was living at home and working as a laborer.[4]
