Josiah was said to have went into business with his uncle, Josiah Sturgis, in January 1804[2] under the name of Sturgis & Lovell, in Charleston, South Carolina.[3] They were merchants, and supplied beef, pork, codfish, mackerel, gin, pepper and brandy, among other items.[2] Josiah Lovell, it appears, was also a member of the partnership of Lovell & Paine with Joseph B. Paine[4][5] — they were ship chandlers.[6]
