Biography

John Lovitt was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

John Lovitt was the son of Celia (Lovitt) Caddell who had relationships with two men before her marriage to Daniel Caddell.[1] Y-DNA testing indicates John's father was a Bachman/Baughman.[2]. See John Baughman (1790-1856) for a potential father. John's brother Canada Lovitt was fathered by a Shipley. John and his brother were raised in the household of their grandfather Edward Lovitt and kept the last name Lovitt.

See the profile of John's mother for information about substantial erroneous family lore.

Three children, other than their own, were raised by John and Sarah Lovitt; namely, Grandson Oliver (enumerated as Alver) in the 1850 Census is listed as Granderson Lovett in the 1870 Census. Nancy C. (Catherine) in 1860 Census is said to have been an orphan whose maiden name was Thomas, and granddaughter Sarah Chambers, age 7 in 1870 Census.

John Lovitt is buried at Briar Creek Cemetery, Whitley County, Kentucky, at Briar Creek Baptist Church. The name on the tombstone is spelled Lovett.
