Biography

Born 1 January 1767 at Cwm-y-to, in the parish of Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire, Wales, the eldest son of Willliam Loyd, of Court Henry, a Carmarthenshire farmer. [1]

He attended a school conducted by David Price, at Llan-y-crwys, near Lampeter, and, in 1785, entered the Presbyterian Academy of 'Carmarthen,' situated at that time at Swansea, completing his course in 1789. In the same year, he entered Manchester Unitarian College where, in his second year, he was appointed assistant tutor in the classics. At about the same time he took charge of the congregation at Lob Lane, near Manchester.

Marring Sarah Jones, 11 Nov 1793, Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England. [2] [3] [4] , the daughter of a Manchester banker, he was persuaded by his brothers-in-law, Samuel and William Jones, to abandon the ministry and to become a partner in their banking business. Three of his brothers also came to Manchester one of whom was Edward Loyd became a clerk at the bank, eventually rising to a management position.

The couple moved to London, where Lewis founded the London branch of the Jones, Loyd and Co. Bank. He turned it into one of the leading banks of the day and prospered handsomely. They lived at Grosvenor Square, St George Hanover Square, Middlesex, England. [5]
Children:

  • Samuel Jones Loyd (1796 - 1883)

And possibly

  • Sarah Matilda (1809 - ?)
  • Elizabeth Grace (1812 - 1829)

Sarah died in 1821, and Lewis possibly married Mrs. Mary Champion, 21 Jan 1828, St. George’s Church, Hanover-square, London, England. [6] She died in 1835. [7] NOTE: THis is possibly the marriage of ? his nephew, Lewis Loyd.

Lewis purchased the Overstone estate in Northamptonshire, where in 1835 he served the office of high sheriff for that county.

He continued in the management of the banking firm at Lothbury until 1846 when he retired to his seat at Overstone, where he died 13 May, 1858, aged 90 years. [8] [9] He left an estate worth nearly £ 2 million.

“MR LEWIS LOYD, the father of Lord Overstone, died on the 13th inst., in his ninety-first year. He was for a period of fifty years the head of the eminent banking firm of Jones Loyd and Co., of Manchester and of Lothbury, London. He was the eldest son of Mr W. Loyd, of Court Henry, county Carmarthen, and early in life became the pastor of a small dissenting chapel at Manchester; but having married the only daughter of a wealthy merchant of that city, the late Mr J. Jones, he was induced to enter the world of commerce. His father-in-law took him into partnership at Manchester, and he showed great capacity in his new position After some years, in consequence of repeated complaints on the part of their London agents as to the difficulty of keeping the accounts of the firm, it was agreed that Mr Loyd should proceed to the metropolis and there establish a bank under the same name as the original firm. This he accordingly did, and Jones, Loyd and Co. of Manchester drew bills on Jones Loyd and Co. of Lothbury, London. The results of Mr Loyds energy, industry, and mercantile intelligence are to be seen directly in the prosperity of the great banking house which bears his name, and more remotely in the elevation of his son, Mr Samuel Jones Loyd, to the honours of the British peerage as Lord Overstone.”
