Biography

Thomas was born in 1794 per his grave stone. He was an early resident of Harrison County, Indiana, likely residing in the part taken to form Crawford County, Indiana in 1818.

Bureau of Land Management records indicate Thomas "Lyntch" of Crawford County made a purchase of 80 acres in Jennings Township of Crawford County by patent dated 16 July 1832.[1] He was recorded purchasing 40 acres in neighboring Harrison County in 1838 but it does not appear Thomas ever resided on this land. His household of 1840 was enumerated in Jennings Township of Crawford County so he may have just been accumulating additional farm or timber land.[2][3] This was not all of the land he owned in the area, just what was purchased early on from the land office at Jeffersonville. He also purchased another 40 acres, being the NE¼NW¼ of Section 22 in Jennings Township by patent dated 1 May 1845.[4]

He was last enumerated at age 60 during the U. S. Federal Census of 1850 residing in Jennings Township of Crawford County, Indiana.[5] His will was dated 26 March 1852 naming his wife Elizabeth and only his three youngest sons, to whom he was bequeathing the land upon which he resided to at the death of their mother. His will was presented for probate in Crawford County the following month.[6] He was buried in neighboring Harrison County, Indiana.[7]

This plat map of Jennings Township, Crawford County is not dated. It was published in a book mid 1920's but I suspect it is a good bit older. It shows Thomas' 80 acres (E½SE¼) & 40 acres (NE¼NW¼) in Section 22 (only the 40 is labeled Lynch but the 80 is still an intact undivided parcel).
