Biography

John Garbh MacLean is a member of Clan MacLean.

John was likely born before 1603 on Coll. He was the son of Lachlan MacLean. He passed away about 1675.

John Garbh's marriage to Fionnvola Campbell connected him to one of the most powerful families in all Scotland. Fionnvola's uncle was Viscount Fentoun, who succeeded Sir Walter Raliegh as captain of the yoeman of the guard of King James in London.[1]

In 1640 John made a disposition for his seven youngest children. "His second son John was to receive four thousand merks at the age of 21,... The third son Hugh, ... was to have 2,000 merks at the same age. The five daughters were each to receive cattle, Fionnvola, the eldest was to have 240 at the age of 21. The second daughter, Una, ...,was to receive 200 ky[cows]. ...The third daughter, Margaret was to receive 120 ky, and the fourth, Katherine 80 and the fifth Janet [Seonaid] was also to receive 80. ... If any of these children were to die before the age of 21 the 'sums of money and goods destined for that person' were to belong to his eldest son Hector Roy.[2]
