Biography

Flora was born about 1843.

In the 1851 census, Donald McRae (40, "tenant of 2 Acers Arable"), wife Catherine (38), children John (14), Alexander (10), Flora (8), Catherine (5) and Donald (2) are resident in Badicaul, Locailsh. Next door are John (52) and Mary (60) Murchison and children Alexander (25), Margaret (30), Christy (28), nephew Murdo Matheson and grand-daughter Christy McLennan^[1]

In the 1861 census, Donald McRae (50, widowed, Lotter (=Crofter)) and children Alexander (20, Fisherman), Flora (18), Catherine (16), Donald (14), Kenneth (12) and Duncan (8) are resident at Badicaul, Locailsh. All were born in Locailsh, all children unmarried, three of the children attend school and there are 2 rooms with windows. Next door is Eliza McLennan (Lotter), and next to her Christy Matheson (60, unmarried, pauper) with daughters Janet Reid (24, married), Mary Murchison (21, unmarried) and grandson John Murchison (6mo). This is the final page of the Badicaul census return so based on the census schedule we can estimate 23 houses in the village.^[2][3]

John Finlayson married Flora McRae on 5 March 1863 in Localsh. John was 35, a bachelor, a "Fisher", resident Erbusaig, son of (blank) Finlayson and Bess Finlayson née McLenhan. Flora was 20, spinster, resident Badicaul, daughter of Donald McRae, servant, and Catherine McRae née Matheson. Witnesses were William McRae and B Finlayson^[4][5]
