He "stood for election to the House of Commons in the 1847 general election, as a Repeal Association candidate in Dundalk", Ireland, but was narrowly defeated after considerable controversy.

Charles Carroll McTavish, Jr., b. March 28, 1859, d. 1949; married Mary Bergin, no children.
Virginia Scott, b. January 26, 1858 (?), d. 1919 in Rome, Italy; never married.
In 1850, he acquired "Carrollton Hall," the Maryland estate of his great-grandfather, the American patriot, Charles Carroll. It was sold off in 1864. [2]
He passed away in 1868.
