Biography

The son of David Magee and Martha (Hewitt) Magee, William was born in Giles County in 1870.^[1] He farmed alongside his father in Dyer County, never marrying.^[2][3] After his mother died and his father grew too old to farm, they moved into Dyersburg, taking up residence with his sister, Susan Ella, and her husband, Henry Bryant, who was the sheriff in Dyersburg. They lived at the jail and William worked there as a guard. In 1920, there were seven prisoners at the jail, in addition to Susan and Henry Bryant, their two children, and their father, then age 80.^[4]

He retired from law enforcement and passed away in Dyersburg at the age of 60 from heart disease and the effects of hepatitis.^[5] He is buried at Rehoboth Church Cemetery in RoEllen, Tennessee.^[6]
