Biography

Flag of Gloucestershire (adopted 2008)
Thomas Mansell was born in Gloucestershire, England.

Thomas Mansell was estimated to have been born about 1664, the son of John Mansell and his wife Joan.[1]

He married Margaret Smith at Preston on Stour on 13 Feb 1697/98. [2]

Thomas and Margaret had at least 6 children, all of whom were baptised at Preston on Stour: Margaret (1699), John (1700/01), Ann (1701), Mary (1703), Thomas (1706) and Robert (1713). The family lived at a property in Preston on Stour known as "The Gables" which Thomas inherited from his brother John who had died in 1699. [3] in 1721 a detailed survey of the village reported that the Mansell's property included a house, barn, two stables, two yards, an orchard and a close. It also included two cottages with gardens. [3]

Death and Burial

Thomas had his will drawn up on 12 Oct 1741, several years before his eventual death. He described himself as "of Preston on Stour, Gloucestershire." [4] His will named:

  • son Robert
  • daughter Ann
  • daughter Mary
  • son John[5]

He died on 27 Mar 1748 and was buried at Preston on Stour, Gloucestershire on 30 Mar 1748. [6] His memorial was recorded by the Rev J H Bloom in about 1900 and read:

Near this place lyeth the body of Margaret Mansell, wife of Thomas Mansell of this town who departed this life the second and buried the 4th 1739-40 aged 64 years. Also here lyeth the body of Thomas Mansell Senior of this town who departed this life March the 27th and was buried the 30th 1748 aged 84 years. While in this world I did remain, my latter end was grief and pain. And so the Lord he thought it best, to take me to a place of rest. [7]

Thomas's will was probated on 9 June 1748. [8]
