Biography

Birth
Laura was born at Hull, Yorkshire, on 24 October 1881,^[1] the daughter of Thomas Cade Marris and his wife Nancy, née Warren, who had been married at Hull on 19 March 1873.^[2][3][4]

1891 Census
The 5 April 1891 census records Laura, aged 9, occupation Scholar, living at 26 Gee Street, Hull, with her parents Thomas and Nancy, and siblings, Thomas, Amy, Ethel Warren, William, Arthur Edward, Wilfred, Hilda, and Charles Herbert.^[5]

1901 Census
The 31 March 1901 census records Laura, aged 19, occupation Housemaid, in service at 412 Anlaby Road, Hull, to Charles Herbert Johnson and his family.^[6]

Marriage
Laura married James Albert Cowen in 1910, their marriage being registered at Hull in Q4 of that year.^[7]

Children
Laura and James Albert had seven children:

1. Laura Kathleen, born at Hull on 7 November 1910^[8] and baptized at St James church, Hull, on 14 December 1910.^[9]
2. Enid Amy, born at Hull on 12 March 1912^[10] and baptized at St James' church, Hull, on 16 October 1912.^[11]
3. Nancy Vera, born at Hull on 25 January 1914.^[12]
4. Hilda Gwendoline, born at Hull in 1916^[13] and baptized at St Mary and St Peter's church at Dairycoates, Hull, on 16 July 1916.^[14]

6. Arthur, born at Hull on 3 December 1920.^[16]
7. Aileen Mavis, born at Hull in 1923.^[17][18] Aileen Mavis died the same year, her death being registered Sculcoates in Q2 of 1923.^[19]

1911 Census
The 2 April 1911 census records Laura, married under one year, with one child still living, resident at 28 Essex Street, Hessle Road, Hull, with her daughter Laura Kathleen (8 months).^[20] Laura's husband James Albert was not listed, presumably away.

1939 Register
The 29 September 1939 register records Laura, occupation Unpaid Domestic Duties, resident at 28 Essex Street, Hull, with her husband James Albert, and unmarried daughters Laura Kathleen, Nancy Vera, and Reina Winifred.^[21]

Husband's Death
Laura's husband James Albert died in 1956, his death being registered at Hull in Q1 of that year.^[22]

Death
Laura died in 1964, her death being registered at Hull in Q3 of that year.^[23]
