In McWhorter's book [14], a lot of family history on the Mary Anne Hitt, Joseph Hall family is provided. Much of the information provided in these pages was provided by Mr. Heavner, son of Mary Martin Heavner who was the oldest child of Stephen Martin, son of Joel Martin who died at Yorktown.
Starting on page 185, we find, "In Jan 1796, Joseph Hall married Ann Strange, nee, Hitt. Tragedy had twice widowed this woman. Her first husband, Joel Martin, a soldier of the Revolution, died at the siege of Yorktown, 1781. Her second Husband, William Strange, was lost on a surveying expedition in the mountains, and his skeleton only was found a great many years afterward."
Regarding Joel Martin, Mr Heavner relates on pages 187-188, "Joel was not a regular enlisted soldier but when Virginia was invaded by the British under Gen. Cornwallis, he took his gun and went out with the patriot troops, never to return. His brother William was an enlisted soldier in the Revolution, and is said to have also been killed at the siege of Yorktown. Joel Martin left two children, Joel born July 26, 1778, and Stephen, born April 14, 1781. Stephen never saw his father."
