William was born at Grange Farm, Pettinain [1] in Lanarkshire on 15th November 1774 and was baptised before the congregation on 20th April 1774. His father was James Martin in Grange however there is no mention of his mother's name. [1]
A further three children are recorded in the Old Parish Records for Pettinain born to James Martin:
Janet Martin baptised at Pettinain 24 Mar 1765. [2]
James Martin baptised at Pettinain 7 Feb 1768. [3]
Thomas Martin baptised at Pettinain 25 Aug 1771. [4]
While no mention is made of their mother, there was a marriage of James Martin to Lilias Smith on 6th June 1763 at Pettinain. [5]
On 27 Nov 1798 William married Janet Coupar in Carstairs, Lanarkshire. [6]
