Jan was a merchant of Amsterdam with ties to the Dutch East Indies Company. He was in London as a merchant in 1601/1602. In 1633, he was listed as a "Hatter" in a court document that included a reference to his son, Cornelius and Cornelius' wife , Lyntje Michelse. This family was NOT related to the family of painters - Cornelius Jonsen van Ceulen.[3]

The family left Cologne before the city was taken by the Spanish in 1559. They initially settled in Antwerp, where Jan Mathijs was baptized at St. Walburgis on June 18, 1580. When Antwerp fell to the Spanish in 1585, the family moved north to Amsterdam. It is not known whether Jan was born in Holland or England however his sister was baptized in Holland in 1606.[4]

Per Source 1 (the book, not email): "Mathij's only known siblings are three brothers, Conraedt, Cornellis, and Klaes... Brother Cornellis has often been confused with British portrait painter Cornelius Jansen Van Ceulen (Ceulen being the English translation for Keulen, referring to the city of Cologne)....

Van Keulen-8 and Mathijs-4 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. I saved the alternate data to the bios. I would keep the patronymic Mathijs LNAB here, as I set it up in this proposal. Van Keulen as an accurate surname on these very deep ancestors is rather suspect. Thanks!
