Biography

Jemima (Mathis) Chandler was born in Kentucky.

Jemima Mathis was the 2nd of eight children. She was born in Green County, Kentucky August 18, 1804. Jemima married James Dobson, July 11, 1822, he died September 27, 1831.

In 1834 Jemima Mathis Dobson arrived in the area around Danville Iowa. She had traveled from Green County, Kentucky to Danville with her mother Hepsiba "Hepsy" Philpott Mathis, her sister Hepsiba Mathis Manly and brother-in-law William with his family . They brought with them Articles of Faith from the Brush Creek Baptist Church in Green County, Kentucky. That fall they helped organize the Long Creek Baptist Church. Source: Mathis Family History

There was only one other existing church in the entire county, and that was in Burlington, which was a considerable distance away. The pioneers were not used to being without a community church and were anxious to organize one as soon as possible. They invited a pastor from McDonough County, Illinois to help them organize a regular Baptist Church at Long Creek, Iowa on October 20, 1834. The people met in a cabin in Augusta Township, unincorporated community 10 miles south of Burlington.

"Jemima Dobson was married to Elihu Chandler June 1835 in Augusta Township, Iowa. " Taken from the Burlington Daily Gazette September 30, 18. Elihu Chandler became a member of the new church in July 1838.

The early church grew, although it had it's share of hardships. Indians were a perpetual menace, and a man had to be posted at the door during the services to keep them from disrupting the service. Another hardship was the membership was small and scattered. Making it impossible to have a regular preacher, but given time and devotion it continued to grow. The Long Creek Baptist Church, which has become the Danville Baptist Church, was the first Baptist Church in the State of Iowa. During the first Centennial celebration of Danville's Baptist Church a stone marker was erected and dedicated by the Iowa Baptist Convention at the site of the cabin where the Long Creek member's met.
