Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Gabriel Maurer was a Georgia colonist.

The family origins of Gabriel Maurer are unknown. On Sept. 15, 1734 T. M. Bonaventura Resch, a Protestant minister and consistorial assessor from Lindau on Lake Constance wrote a letter recommending several persons to settle in Georgia. One of the persons he recommended was Gabriel Maurer, from Radstadt, “a mason's apprentice, 26 years old” and that he was a “very honest soul.” This would give him an approximate birth year of 1708.[1]He traveled on the ship with Hans Maurer, relationship unknown.[2]

In A List of Early Settlers of Georgia Gabriel is listed with another Maurer:

  • # 980. Maurer, Gabriel—Mason; embark'd 31 Oct. 1734; arrived 28 Dec. 1734. Saltsburger settled at Ebenezer, Province of Georgia; living 13 March 1738/9.
  • # 981.——, Hans—Carpenter; embark'd 31 Oct. 1734; arrived 28 Dec. 1734. Saltsburger settled at Ebenezar; living 13 March 1738/9.[3]

3 Feb 1738 gifts were distributed and Gabriel received 3 shillings and 7 pence. 25 Nov 1738 Gabriel is on a list of men living in Ebenezer.[4]

8 Dec 1739 Gabriel told Boltzius he wanted to marry Elizabeth Held. They were married on 12 Dec 1739. [5]

Death

Gabriel died 1 Mar 1766 in Ebenezer and was buried the next day in the plantation cemetery..[6]
