Biography

Calvin was born in 1848. He is the son of James May and Abigail Hotchkiss.

Calvin graduated from Commercial College in New Haven in 1868 and later Yale where he studied medicine in order to become a Physician. He earned his MD in 1873. He is described as serving in several hospitals in Men of Progress page 366. First he served as a house surgeon at the New Haven Hospital. Further posts were from 1874 to 1877 he was assistant physician at the Connecticut Hospital for the Insane at Middletown, and for 1877 he was the acting superintendent. He then served the next four years (until 1881) as Superintendent of the State Hospital for the Insane at Danvers, Massachusetts. In a884 Dr. May went to New York city for the general pracitice, establishing himself at 205 West 57th street.

Dr. Calvin May married Rebecca P. Cushing on Feb 23, 1877. The had one child, Eleanor Cushing May.
