Biography

The Register - Saturday 10 July 1920

Mr. John Joseph May, who died on Friday morning at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. H. Stuart, of Kirkcaldy. was 74 years of age. He was born at Posen, in Prussia, and at the age of six was brought to South Australia by his father and mother, the former a Prussian and the latter a Pole. He became a printer, and more than 50 years ago jointed tripooraphical staff of The Register. Later he established himself as a stationer in Rundle street, 'but abandoned this enterprise to enter the service of Messrs. Rigor's. Afterwards he was in the employ of Messrs. Cawthorne's and Wigg's successively, and an accident 10 years ago compelled his retirement from the latter firm. He married, in 1870, Miss Agnes Tucker, whose father came out in the Buffalo [sic] [1], (should be - Mother - Agnes Henderson age 15 Buffalo 1836) and worked with Col. Light in the survey of Adelaide. The surviving children are Mesdames H. Stuart and A. Stuart, of North Unley, and Mr. A. V. May, of Glenelg.
