Biography

James Alexander McArthur was born May 14, 1865 in Carroll County, Tennessee. [1] to Daniel Martin McArthur and Mary Ann "Polly" Matlock McArthur. [2][3]

James becomes a farmer. In later years, on the 1940 Census, he lists the 3rd grade as the highest grade completed in school.

On August 19, 1883, James Alexander McArthur marries Willie Ann Catherine Hampton, in Carroll County, Tennessee. [4] This is confirmed on the 1900 Census showing their approximate marriage year as 1884, their having been married for 16 years. [5]

James and Willie have six children:

Lillie Mae McArthur (1885-1974) [6]

Linnie H McArthur (1987-1970)[7]

James Kennie McArthur (1891-1967)[8][9]

William Dennie McArthur (1894-)[10][11]

Byron McArthur (1900-1929) [12]

James Arvel McArthur (1909-1970) [13][14][15]

On the 1900 Census, Willie's mother, Mary Polly Chambers Gateley Hampton McArthur, comes to live with the couple. With her is her daughter, Lavinia "Lovie," who lives with Willie all her life. Mary Polly had married James Alexander McArthur's uncle, John Benton McArthur on 3 Aug 1976. [16]

The geographic location for James is as follows:

James Alexander in 1870-1910-District 15, Carroll County, Tennessee[17][18][19][20]

Then in 1920 the family relocates to Arkansas.

James Alexander in 1920-1930-Union, Prairie, Arkansas[21][22]

James Alexander in 1935-1940-Lee County, Arkansas[23]

The place of death for James was unknown to my branch of the family. By searching for death records specifically linked to the counties where his children lived, I was able to find the following listing for James A McArthur. The date of death fits, and his daughter, Lillie, was living in Monroe County at the time. So based on this information, I think his date of death is September 9, 1940 in Monroe County, Tennessee, USA. [24]

I have been unable to locate the burial place for James Alexander McArthur or his wife, Willie.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
