Biography

Catharine, or Catherine, McConnologue was born about 1856 in Rock county, Wisconsin. She was the youngest child of her mother, Sarah Rogers' five children. Her father, John, had one older daughter from an earlier marriage, giving Kate two brothers, John and Daniel, and three sisters, Retta, Sarah and Mary. The entire family was living at home in 1860 in Newark township in Rock county of Wisconsin.^[1] Bridget, age 15, later took the name Theresa Loretta, or "Retta" for short. Mary's children and grandchildren knew her as "Auntie" or Annie. Retta probably was married before the 1870 US Census and was not in Kate's household in that year.^[2] The McConnelogue family moved south from Wisconsin to Hardin county, Iowa in about 1872 and it appears that Kate remained in Wisconsin for a few years. Sarah, the mother, died in Iowa the next year.

Her married name of Sullivan is from her sister, Mary's obituary.^[3] No marriage date is known, but an estimate of 1873 at age 17 is based on the birth of her first child in 1874. She married John Archibald Sullivan, the son of John and Rose Sullivan. He was born in Rock county about 1850. They had two daughters while in Wisconsin; Sarah 1874, and Ellen 1876. Sometime between 1876 and 1880, they moved to Hardin county, Iowa. These two girls were in their household in 1880 in Sherman township.^[4] That year, their third child was born in Radcliffe township on the 23rd of June and her name was Margaret Marcella.^[5] A son, David, was born in September of 1882, and another son, Daniel Roger, was born one year later in Webster City, Hamilton county, Iowa.^[6]

Their next child, Archibald John, was born in December 1884 in Broadhead township, Rock county, Wisconsin.^[7] They had John in 1887 and Arthur in 1889, then their ninth, William, on 3 September 1891 in Avon township.^[8] Leo joined their family in Avon on 26 October 1893.^[9] Three more children arrived; Mase in 1895, Marie in 1896 and Beth in 1899.

In the mean time, Kate's older children were getting married and leaving home. Her oldest daughter, Sarah, was married in March of 1900 in Douglas county, Wisconsin, to Ernest Pletts.^[10] In the 1900 US Census, John and Kate had eight children at home in Avon town.^[11] Other information in that census reveals that Kate was the mother of twelve children and eleven were alive. Seven children were at home in 1905,^[12] and three were left in 1910,^[13] and none were left in 1920, when they were living in Beloit township.^[14]

Kate and John were living in Beloit with their daughter, Marie, and her husband, Joseph Monahan, along with three grandchildren, in 1930.^[15] John died on 5 February 1933 and Kate died on 7 August 1935. They were each laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery in Beloit.^[16]

Note that there are many different spellings of McConneloug, such as McConnelong, McConnelogue, as well as phonetic variations from verbal renumerations, transcriptions from handwritten records, and other sources. These are not considered errors which need to be corrected, and most descendants should recognize variations were frequent and inevitable. Sources below have kept the indexed spelling. Biography above is purposely inconsistent because sources are inconsistent. Surname of profiles here on WikiTree have consistently used the spelling McConnelogue to affirm relationship, but this spelling may have only been the variation that one branch of the family in Nebraska, from which the author and manager of these profiles descended, frequently used.
