Biography

Catherine Anne McCulley was born about 1846 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

She married William Byrne (transcribed in the register as Bernard). Their marriage was registered in 1865 in Liverpool. [1]

In 1881, she was with her husband and 5 children at 77 Alma Terrace, Parr, Lancashire. Her husband was a police constable. [2]

In 1891 she was with three sons in Windle, Lancashire. She was recorded as marrried but her husband was not at home the night of the census. [3]

The General Register Office birth records of her children (with various spellings of their surname) Catherine's maiden name of McCulley

  • George Charles Byrne was registered as George Charles Byrne
  • John Thomas Byrne was registered as John Thomas Bierne
  • William Byrne was registered William Burns
  • Catherine Byrne was registered as Catherine Burns
  • Peter Byrne (b1877) was registered as Peter Byrne in 1877 died 1878 with death registered under the name of Peter Burns
  • Peter Byrne (b 1879) was registered at birth as Peter Burns

The marriage record for Catherine McCulley in 1865 in Liverpool (from where Catherine originated) fits well with the birth of the oldest child, although the her husband's name (William Bernard) is not a clear match. There are no other appropriate marriage records and no other evidence of a William Bernard in or around Liverpool at the time. I concluded that Bernard was another variation of the name Byrne. In the light of the other misspellings, I concluded that it was probably the correct marriage. Even if it isn’t, the fact that the birth registrations of the 5 children with birth locations corresponding to the appropriate Registration Districts leaves me in little doubt that these are the correct birth records, and that McCulley was her maiden name.
