Elizabeth was born in 1831 in Kentucky.

She was the daughter of Henry McDonald and Ann Hopkins.
In 1846, Elizabeth moved to Poweshiek, Iowa with her family.

The 1850 census of Poweshiek County

shows that her three younger siblings Martha, Charles and Rebecca where born in Indiana, indicating that the family had lived there in the 1830s.
Around 1847 Elizabeth married Isaac Miller. The 1850 and 1860 censuses of Mahaska County, Iowa and the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Poweshiek County, Iowa list several children: Rebecca J, Isaac N, Anne E, Clarendon A, Charles A, Enoch A, Rosa D, Alvin, Elvan and Christopher C.

Some time after 1880 they moved to Brule County, South Dakota where her husband passed away on 25th January 1885.
