John Jr. was born about 1702, the son of John Mcdowell and Jane "unknown" McDowell. While his father and brothers emigrated to America, John stayed behind and, at some point in time, left Ireland and went to Wigtownshire, Scotland. In Scotland he went by the name James in the Church records.
James married Janet Donnan in Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland on 21 January 1723. [1]
James and Janet had 3 children:
Antony McDowall, baptised 26 July 1724 at Glasserton, Wigtown,
Alexander McDowall, Baptised 24 April 1726 in Penninghame, Wigtown.
Mary McDowall, Baptised 29 Oct 1731 in Kirkinner, Wigtown.
James had 2 children with Helen McKie ( no marriage record):
John McDowell, baptised 22 October 1728 in Penningham.
From "Look to the Past" [6] , the Children of John McDowell and Jane are:
Robert McDowell
John McDowell Jr
Charles McDowell
Ann McDowell
Elizabeth McDowell
James McDowell
William McDowell
Joseph McDowell.
Of these 8 children, John Jr, Elizabeth and Ann appear to be unaccounted for in Colonial America records. The 2 girls most probably were married and either stayed in Ireland, or emigrated with their husbands.
There are no records of John Jr's presence in America, even though, on page 62 of "The MacDowalls",[7] the author alludes that "John Jr. died young in Pennsylvania".
From ScotlandsPeople there does not appear to be a James McDowall born in Wigtown from 1699 through 1707, which supports his birth was most likely in Ireland.
Dna matching results for descendants of John Jr "James"McDowall point distinctly towards the extended McDowell family from Glenoe, Ireland, descendants of Thomas McDowell. These McDowell's are the patriarchs of many of the McDowells in the U.S. The move to Scotland, instead of America, by John Jr put a line of descendants through several generations in Scotland and Ireland before appearing in the U.S. and Canada in the late 1800's.
