Biography

Son of John Randolph McElderry and Isabella Frush

He grew up in the Fairfield, Iowa area and had 9 siblings. He was still found in this area in on the Iowa State Census of 1895, so he left for Montana sometime after this.

He was married at least 4 times, some of which may be for brief periods and in some cases there were a number of unclear "incidents" that occurred.

His first wife was Rose Katz. They were married in Butte, Montana on 4 January 1897. The couple does not appear to have had any children, however, the 1900 Census record showing Hubert and Rose has not been found to date. They were no longer married by 1905 and most likely prior to that date. There is some potential evidence that they were no longer married prior to 1900, so this is another possibility.

His second wife was Corinne Machado. Her LNAB may be questionable as various records show her with other last names as well, but research appears to show Machado as the most likely candidate. They were married somewhere (most likely) in September 1905, likely in Alameda County, California. The marriage license was noted in a Alameda County newspaper in early September 1905. This marriage would have been extremely short lived, as he married again in 1906. The other line of thinking on his marriage to Corinne shows an article indicating a marriage in 1900, which lines up better with the birth of children in 1900 and 1902. It also provides additional time as both these marriages and the birth of his children occurred around the Alameda County area, while the next was in Iowa.

His third wife (which is noted as his second on the marriage certificate) was Kittie "Kate" A. Wilkins. They married in 1906 and she died in 1906, so this was his shortest marriage as far as can be determined. His wife died of chloroform poisoning, which appears to be self-induced. Chloroform was often used as a pain medication, and it appears that she had been self-medicating when she overdosed on the chemical. Hubert was held in custody in Chicago during the investigation and apparently ended up being released due to lack of evidence to charge him.

From here Hubert appears to have decided to go to Canada, where he met his fourth wife. He married Elizabeth Agnes Hirst in New Westminster, British Columbia on 14 July 1914. This time, they remained married until his death in 1925.
