Biography

Martha McCasland's name and age were recorded in Hugh Laughlin's district of parishioners in 1789, a list that includes her brothers and step-mother.[1] The record places her birth year at about 1742, several years prior to her father's marriage to Rebecca McFarland. She first married James Kirkpatrick on 18 May 1764 in Carlisle, PA.[2] By this marriage she had four children, who were all named in Orphan's Court on 27 Feb 1781, a few years after their father died:

  1. Samuel Kirkpatrick, born in 1767
  2. Benjamin Kirkpatrick, born about 1769
  3. Rebecca Kirkpatrick, born about 1772
  4. Hugh Kirkpatrick, born about 1776

Martha was married a second time, to John McCausland, before 8 Apr 1778, when she signed the inventory of James Kirkpatrick's estate as Martha McCausland. [Proper citation for this loose record not available, so image attached.][3] By this marriage she had three more children:

  1. James McCausland, born about 1778
  2. Martha (Patsy) McCausland, born about 1779
  3. Elizabeth McCausland, born about 1780
