Biography

Oscar was born in 1877. He was the son of Lorenzo McGuire and Margaret Sifford. He joined the US Army on Nov 18,1897 when he was almost 21 years old. He was described at that time as being 5'10" tall with a fair complexion, brown eyes and light brown hair. He was a farmer when he enlisted in the Army. According to his military records, he served in the Spanish American War in 1898. He was in the battalion that took San Juan Hill. Oscar was promoted to Corporal on March 6, 1900 at Fort Crook, NE. He married Nellie Hitchcock in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Sheridan, WY on Nov 6, 1901. He was 24 and Nellie was 18. His wife's parents and his father also lived near them. Six of their seven children were born in Sheridan. He moved with his family to Seattle in 1917 and in 1920, his 7th child was born. The family lived in a small house in West Seattle where he drove a laundry truck. They were members of Highland Methodist Church in West Seattle. His various other occupations in his lifetime were : Washer in the Sheridan Laundry; Health Officer, and Policeman. After Nellie died in 1944, he married Norah Vaughn. He passed away in 1947. Obituary, Seattle Times, Nov 5, 1947: "Funeral services for Oscar McGuire, 70 years old, 7933 16th S.W., who died on Sunday in a hospital, were scheduled this afternoon in the West Home Chapel with burial in Forest Lawn. Mr. McGuire, born in Missouri, had lived in Seattle 30 years. He was a retired laundry-truck driver. He was a member of Fortson-Thygesen Camp No. 2, United Spanish War Veterans. Surviving are his widow n\Norah, three sons, Charles, and Frank McGuire, Seattle, and Melvin, Olympia; four daughters, Mrs. Laura Isbell, Mrs. William (sic - Myron) Bement, Mrs. Mabel Huntington, Seattle, and Mrs. Ethel Andrews, Bellevue; a sister, Mrs. Ed Webb, Missouri; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren."
