Biography

Jesse McGuire was probably born some time between 1796-1800, There is some evidence his father was living in Montgomery County, Virginia at that time but this is also the time frame in which his father moved to Kentucky. We know Jesse was still under 21 in 1817. He was the son of Cornelius McGuire and Esther Stratton.

Jesse begins to appear in records in 1814, when he worked on survey crews in Floyd Co., KY. He married Elizabeth Garrett 17 June 1821 in Floyd Co., KY. She was born about c1802 in Henry Co., VA, a daughter of Elimelich Garrett and Sarah Vaughn. Jesse's older brother, Solomon McGuire, married Elizabeth's sister, Susanna Garret in 1812. Jesse and Elizabeth were probably the parents of at least three children:

  1. Louisa McGuire (born c1826)
  2. Harriett McGuire (born c1828); married Weeks Salmon in 1845
  3. Elimelich Garrett McGuire (born c1829)

Jesse owned about 100 acres of land on John's Creek and Ivy Creek. He also served the county as Constable (1818), Deputy Sheriff (1821) and finally as a Justice of the Peace (1825).

The last record known was in 1828. He apparently died before the 1830 Census, when his widow, Elizabeth, was living with her mother, Sarah Garrott. Elizabeth died of dysentery in 1855.

The Bastardy Case

In August 1821, one Catherine Porter initiated a bastardy case against Jesse McGuire in Floyd County court. Catherine failed to appear in court and the Commonwealth's attorney chose not to prosecute. It is possible that the child in question was Cornelius Henderson Porter. However, Jesse's paternity is not at all certain.
