Note about the name Girzal: this is a one spelling of the Scots version of Griselda, a name with Germanic roots which was used throughout Europe (the spelling varies wildly, a few examples are Grissel, Grizel, Grissall and Girsell[1]. However, it was often shortened to Griz or Griss and used almost interchangeably with Grace[2]. Its Germanic flavour meant that the Grizal version, already less popular, fell completely out of favour with the onset of the First World War in 1914. This Girzal is recorded as Grace on some documents (her weddings banns, for example) but I am confident they represent the same person.
Girzal was born in 1825, the daughter of Lewis McIlvride and Ann Jack[3]. She was the fourth child of eight born to the couple. Her father was a stone mason.
Girzal married John McGregor in 1846. The couple applied to have their banns proclaimed on the 13th of March and would have been married not long after[4].
Girzal died in 1875 aged only 49 years[5]. Her cause of death is given as cardiac dropsy. Dropsy is an old term for oedema, so it seems likely that Girzal died of what we would now call heart failure.
