A note about the name McIlvride. Spelling was of course much more fluid in past centuries, but the variations in the spelling of McIlvride seem particularly egregious. His name is recorded as McIlvrede on Lewis's baptism record; as McIlvride on his banns proclamation; as McIlvrid on his eldest child's baptism record; at the 1841 census he is recorded as Lewis McIlorede; at the 1851 census it has been rendered as McFloride. I have settled on the spelling 'McIlvride' only because it seems slightly more common across the family, but I am quite willing to reconsider this should anyone studying this family make a case for it.
Lewis was born in 1795 at Ballochargie Farm in Perthshire[1], which still exists today, to the north-west of Muthill. He was the youngest of 10 children born to James McIlvride and his wife Grizel. James was a pendicler[2], which was a smallholder sub-letting a small piece of land from a farmer[3]. This is likely to have been a hard and precarious life for the family[4].
In 1819 Lewis, aged 25, married Ann Jack[5], who was also 25 years old. Their banns were recorded on the 26th of September, and they would have been married soon after this. Ann gave birth to their first child, a daughter, in April 1920, so the couple were apparently a little early in consummating their marriage[6]. They named their daughter Clementina, after Ann's mother. Clementina's birth is recorded as occurring in Muthill, so it appears that Lewis stayed quite close to his place of birth after his marriage.
Lewis and his wife went on to have 9 children in total[7]. James was born in 1821; Alexander in 1823; Girzal in 1825; Margaret in 1827; Ann in 1830, Dinah in 1832, Janet in 1834 and Robert in 1839. All of the children were baptised in Muthill Parish.
At the 1841 census Lewis, now 46 years old, appears to be living with his brother Peter in Springburn in Glasgow[8]. Both are described as masons, which is consistent with Lewis's recorded profession of journeyman mason on other document; it is conceivable that a mason might travel for work to a large city. However, I have been unable as yet to find any trace of Lewis's wife and those children still young enough to be living with her.
By the time of the 1851 census, Lewis was 56 years old. Lewis and Ann were living in Muthill, and their sons Alexander (now 29) and Robert (11) are the only children still living with them[9]. Lewis is still described as a mason; his son Alexander has become a carpenter.
Lewis died on the 18th of March, 1861 in Muthill[10]. He was 66 years old. His cause of death is given as "head affliction, some years," an unhelpfully vague description. He is described as a pauper, so it would suggest that he has been unable to work. His death was registered by Robert, his youngest child, who would have been 21 at the time of his father's death. He states that he was present at the death.
